Reading God's word is a vital way to hear God's voice
God longs to spend time with us and as we read the bible we get to know his character, His unending love and mercy for us, His plan for our lives, and His great rescue plan for humankind!

Getting started: When should we read?

Try to pick a consistent time that you will read together so your kids know what to expect! (Don’t worry or get discouraged if you miss a day or 2 or more, just pick up where you left off and keep going).

What bible should we read?

For younger children, some suggestions of children’s bibles are: Read With Me Bible (NIrV Bible Storybook), The Promises of God Story Book Bible by Jennifer Lyell, The Jesus Storybook Bible by Sally Lloyd-Jones.

For older kids, The Action Bible is a great way to kick start their love of the Bible but when you read together as a family, we would suggest reading a non-graphic bible version (The NIV or NLT are great versions for kids).

For older kids (around grade 4 and older), they can begin to read a non-graphic bible version (NIV or NLT) on their own and we have included a bible reading plan below.

Tips for reading the bible with children:

+ Pray and invite the Holy Spirit to speak to you “For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires”. Hebrews 4:12 (NLT)

+Ask questions as you read “Hmm that was interesting, what do you think about that?” etc.

+Don’t worry if you don’t have all the answers There are some great resources available that would help with bible understanding on Rightnow Media. If you have not signed up for your free account, we suggest you go HERE to do so and check out: Books of the Bible with Buck Denver & Friends, The Bible Project and the "How to Read__" videos

+Questions to ask as you read scripture together: What did you like? What did you not like? What did we learn about God? What is God like in this story? What has he done? What did we learn about people? What is God saying to us? How should we respond? What should we do? Who do we tell?
